OpenAI's Latest Sora App Allows You to Create Fun Deepfake Versions of Yourself

On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled an AI video application named Sora. This innovative platform utilizes OpenAI’s newest video generation model, Sora 2, and features a TikTok-like For You page showcasing user-created content. This marks OpenAI’s inaugural product launch that incorporates AI-generated sounds into videos. Currently, it’s exclusively accessible on iOS and requires an invitation code for participation.

“You are about to enter a creative world of AI-generated content,” states an advisory message shown during the app registration process. “Some videos may feature recognizable individuals, but the actions and events depicted are not real.”

OpenAI is betting on the idea that creating and sharing AI deepfakes will gain traction as a popular entertainment medium. Whether your peers, influencers, or random online users, Sora promotes the generation of deepfake videos as a scrollable form of enjoyment. The app’s primary feed offers an endless array of bite-sized AI-generated content featuring human faces.

During the setup, users have the option to create a digital likeness of themselves by reciting a few numbers and rotating their head while the app records. “The team put in significant effort to ensure character consistency,” noted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a blog post regarding Sora’s debut.

Users can decide who is permitted to utilize their digital likeness in Sora videos. This setting can be configured to allow access for everyone or restricted to just oneself, approved individuals, or mutual connections on the platform. Whenever someone generates a video involving your likeness, even if it’s just saved in their drafts, you will be able to view the complete clip from your account page.

First Impressions

Several of the most popular videos on my For You feed this Tuesday afternoon featured Altman’s likeness. One AI-generated video showed the OpenAI CEO pilfering a graphics processing unit from Target. When caught, a voice resembling Altman’s pleads with a security guard for permission to keep the GPU to create AI tools.

Many of the videos generated during WIRED’s evaluation displayed some rough edges and various errors. However, Sora enables remarkably smooth creation of personalized deepfakes that frequently appear and sound convincingly authentic.

To include the likenesses of individuals in your videos, simply tap on their faces on Sora’s generation page and add them as “cameos.” Then, input a straightforward prompt, such as “fight in the office over a WIRED story.”
