The Data Center Defiance Has Emerged

Thomas, who secured reelection last week, highlights local opposition to the proposed Prince William Digital Gateway, which aims to establish over 30 data centers near a national reserve in the northern part of the state. A group of homeowners has legally challenged the project, and a judge annulled the zoning in August, temporarily halting construction.

“The little guy finally emerged victorious, which is a rare occurrence in any industry, especially where the Magnificent Ten operate,” he notes, referring to the largest tech companies in the US. “I believe this has galvanized political support in Virginia.”

Like Hubbard, Thomas observes that many of his constituents are worried about the potential impact of data centers on their electricity bills. “People are increasingly cost-conscious,” he remarks. He adds that energy bills “have remained relatively stable for several years.” However, in Virginia, the electricity demand from data centers is contributing to rising utility costs, according to Thomas.

Both Thomas and Hubbard are Democrats, but the opposition to data centers, as highlighted by the Data Center Watch report, spans across party lines. Some national Republican figures, including Sen. Josh Hawley, Rep. Thomas Massie, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, have also voiced concerns about these developments.

“Residents must closely monitor local city, county, and state approvals of data centers and ensure your water and energy bills are safeguarded!!!” Greene, who has been vocal against data center expansion for months, shared on X on November 7.

So far, major tech companies have issued few public comments regarding the backlash against data center projects. While some, such as Meta, offer public information about their data centers, others in the sector heavily rely on nondisclosure agreements when constructing new facilities, leaving communities with minimal information about these projects—including which tech companies may be involved.
