Swatch's Innovative AI Tool Enables You to Customize Your Own Watch Design

Just like Swatch x You, the watch can be customized further by selecting indexes or choosing the color of its mechanism. To minimize the power consumption of data centers and keep creativity in check, AI‑DADA restricts users to three prompts a day, which Swatch promotes as a “creative challenge that makes each attempt feel unique.”

What we have is essentially a new iteration of Swatch x You, enhanced with image-generation technology from OpenAI, allowing users to decorate their watches with any graphics they can envision. I can’t help but wonder what could go wrong?

I inquired with Roberto Amico, Swatch’s global head of digital, about what measures are in place to prevent users from creating controversial designs like a Jeffrey Epstein Swatch, or a White Power Swatch, or even a Swatch featuring a Rolex logo, or something resembling it.

Amico reassured me that Swatch has indeed implemented guidelines, particularly regarding logos, as well as adhering to certain restrictions from OpenAI. However, Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek Jr. mentioned that he negotiated with OpenAI to remove some existing restrictions, aiming to make AI‑DADA “more liberal, more Swatch.”

Hayek also admitted during the launch event in Switzerland that his initial prompts on AI‑DADA revolved around “sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll,” but was informed that his model wouldn’t permit such content. Nonetheless, one cannot underestimate the public’s creativity in circumventing clear limitations—like banning the reproduction of nudity or religious symbols—and potentially designing something that Swatch may want to avoid. Only time will tell just how robust this model really is.

Familiar Faces

Although Swatch’s image model stems from OpenAI, it primarily utilizes a dataset consisting of over 40 years of Swatch watches, products, designs, art, and street art. Do you like a specific pattern or color from an iconic 1980s Swatch dial or strap? It’s all included. Fond of a collaboration with Keith Haring or Vivienne Westwood or Phil Collins? The model has that covered as well. Only if you request a design inspired by elements outside of this curated archive, does AI‑DADA access OpenAI’s broader dataset, as explained by Amico.
