Best of Luck Finding a Mac Mini in the Coming Months

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, announced during the earnings call on Thursday that it may take “several months” to satisfy the soaring demand for the Mac Mini, the company’s compact, screen-free desktop computer. This statement follows recent findings from developers who identified the Mac Mini as an ideal device for agentic AI tasks.

“Both the Mac Mini and Mac Studio are exceptional platforms for AI and agentic tools,” Cook stated on the earnings call, addressing questions from analysts. “Customer adoption is happening faster than we anticipated.”

This update arrives as the company enjoys another record-breaking quarter. Although iPhone sales fell short of expectations, demand for the iPhone 17 remains extremely high, and Apple’s subscription services continue to grow.

Apple encountered supply issues affecting both the iPhone and Mac product lines this quarter. The shortages for iPhones stem largely from a limited supply of advanced chips. Cook highlighted at least two factors contributing to the Mac shortages: the swift adoption of generative AI and unexpected interest in the company’s new, colorful, and budget-friendly MacBook Neo laptop.

Typically, Mac sales are only a fraction of iPhone sales—$8.4 billion this quarter versus nearly $57 billion for iPhones—and the Mac Mini represents an even smaller slice. However, following the launch of OpenClaw earlier this year, an open-source AI tool, Mac Minis began selling rapidly as they provide adequate power and a dedicated environment for agentic AI tasks.

Some eager customers have waited months for their Mac Minis. MacRumors reported in early March that Apple ceased selling a version of the computer with 512 GB of memory. As of last week, the base model of the Mac Mini was completely sold out.

Cook and his expected successor, John Ternus, also discussed Cook’s impending transition from the CEO position later this year. Cook mentioned during the earnings call that it’s the “right moment” to transition to the executive chairman role for various reasons, such as Apple’s strong financial position and an “incredible” upcoming product road map. He praised Ternus as a “person of remarkable character and a born leader.”

Ternus then briefly joined the call to endorse Cook as a business leader and to reassure investors that he would adopt a similarly thoughtful and measured approach to leading the company. He also referenced the company’s product road map.

While both leaders provided little detail about the supposedly exciting product road map, there is hope that it will include more … road Macs.
