Trump Shifts Stance on AI Regulation, Former DOGE Employee Steps into Politics, and Understanding Hantavirus

Brian Barrett: This is the first time in years that I’ve thought about contact tracing, and I was relieved to forget it for so long since it’s such a complex and labor-intensive process. Emily, with all that in mind, what is the level of concern here considering the statements from the World Health Organization and other bodies? It seems like there’s caution, but maybe not a full-blown panic yet. I’ll defer to your expertise, as perhaps I’m just trying to ease my own worries.

Emily Mullin: You’re right. The hantavirus expert I spoke with mentioned that while there have been past clusters of the Andes strain, they haven’t resulted in significant outbreaks. These clusters usually involve extended close contact with infected individuals. This virus doesn’t transmit nearly as efficiently as other respiratory viruses we’re familiar with, such as Covid or the flu. Additionally, hantavirus symptoms tend to be quite severe. So this isn’t a virus like Covid, where many can spread it unknowingly. This offers a certain level of reassurance, even though the illness is serious. The World Health Organization indicates the current risk to the general public is low, suggesting this is unlikely to escalate into another Covid-like situation.

Brian Barrett: Leah, what’s your take?

Leah Feiger: Not great, you guys. Seriously, how are you feeling? Maybe it’s my chance to go, “Are you on board yet?”

Brian Barrett: I was fine, but then Emily’s emphasis on “probably” made me feel a bit anxious.

Leah Feiger: Yeah, it was that “probably” that got me.

Emily Mullin: That was me adding my own commentary. The World Health Organization didn’t say “probably.”

Brian Barrett: What if they had put it in italics or large quotation marks? Like it’s “probably” fine.

Leah Feiger: I don’t know, but I find it interesting that there are different strains. It reminds me of the early Covid days when armchair scientists insisted everything was fine. The official acknowledgment that this strain can be transmitted between humans is noteworthy, at the very least.

Brian Barrett: Absolutely. My lingering questions are about how long the people on this ship will have to stay before they’re cleared to leave, or if they’ll need to return to shore and isolate for a time. The contact tracing aspect raises concerns for me since it stirs up some flashbacks. Still, I believe the points you made, Emily, about how this differs from Covid—especially regarding its transmissibility and the improved measures we have for contact tracing—allow me to remain not too worried for now.
