Nvidia’s RTX Spark Laptops Aim to Shake Things Up

The moment many have awaited for years is finally here. Nvidia has consistently produced graphics cards that have fueled the Windows PC landscape for decades—now it aims to dominate the entire ecosystem with “superchips,” beginning with the RTX Spark.

Unveiled over the weekend at the Computex technology expo in Taiwan, RTX Spark chips meld unified memory, RTX graphics, and a new addition: the N1 CPU. Nvidia has long held sway over AI processing in data centers with its GPUs. Now, it is making strides into locally executed AI. While this is just an initial glimpse of what’s ahead, these devices may genuinely represent the long-rumored “AI PC.”

The Imitation AI PC

Microsoft has promoted the concept of “AI PCs” since 2024, but it has often felt insubstantial. Sure, its Copilot+ PCs featured built-in neural processing units (NPUs) and started with 16 GB of RAM, yet they lacked the capability to run large language models locally, no better than your smartphone. Rather than develop excitement around AI, Microsoft’s early claims about the future of computing fell flat.

Though still needing evaluation and with pricing yet to be determined, these new Nvidia laptops genuinely appear to be the real deal when it comes to AI PCs. With unified memory reaching up to 128 GB, an efficient Arm-based CPU, and Nvidia’s renowned RTX graphics cards, these computers offer capabilities previously unseen outside the realm of MacBook Pro. This rivalry is crucial, as the MacBook Pro (or Mac desktops) was the primary choice for AI enthusiasts wanting to run foundational models locally.

Nvidia is extending its technology to its typical collaborators within the Windows ecosystem, including HP, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, and more. However, Microsoft’s own Surface Laptop Ultra might represent the pinnacle of this new PC era. It serves as a true alternative to the MacBook Pro, boasting a 15-inch Mini-LED display and multiple ports in a package comparable in size. Microsoft has not released a performance-oriented Surface device in years, and this one arrives ahead of a rumored “MacBook Pro Ultra” expected later this year.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my excitement. One major issue with Windows laptops aiming to compete with the MacBook Pro has been battery life. They often rely on discrete graphics cards (typically from Nvidia), leading to downgrades in battery longevity and increased fan noise. Only this year, following Intel’s new Core Ultra Series 3 chip release, have we encountered laptops like the Dell XPS 14 that can better balance GPU performance and battery life like the MacBook Pro. However, those configurations are limited to a maximum of 64 GB of memory.

The benefits extend beyond just increased memory. The graphics can be as powerful as a discrete RTX 5070. Moreover, the software layer (known as CUDA) allows developers to make full use of the system’s GPU cores. Nvidia has cultivated an advanced AI platform around CUDA due to its application in data centers. Bringing that AI processing capability to local PCs could unlock AI performance that far exceeds what current machines are capable of. Mac development has surged in the past year, but it still lags behind the scale Nvidia can achieve with RTX Spark.

Igniting a Revolution

Don’t assume these will come at a budget-friendly price. Some projections suggest that high-end configurations of RTX Spark laptops may exceed $4,000. This shouldn’t be surprising, as similarly equipped MacBook Pros command comparable prices nowadays.

It’s increasingly plausible to foresee a near future where local AI models are routinely utilized for inference in various work projects. As agentic models become more accessible and refined, local usage will increasingly be favored for privacy considerations. Demand for the Mac Mini is already surging, resulting in extended shipping times, which Apple attributes to rapid adoption of AI technology. RTX Spark is also targeting the Mac Mini market, with several compact desktop PCs on the horizon.
