Jony Ive Expresses Desire for His OpenAI Devices to 'Bring Us Joy'

During OpenAI’s developer conference in San Francisco on Monday, CEO Sam Altman and former Apple designer Jony Ive discussed, in general terms, the “family of devices” they are currently developing.

“While phones and computers are impressive, there’s something new we can create,” Altman mentioned on stage alongside Ive. They affirmed that OpenAI is working on more than one hardware item, but specific details, including use cases and specifications, remain undisclosed.

“Creating hardware is challenging. Discovering new computing form factors is not easy,” Altman remarked in a media briefing earlier that day. “We believe we have the potential to create something remarkable, but it will take time.”

Ive noted that his team has come up with “15 to 20 compelling product” concepts as they seek the right hardware focus for the company.

“Our relationship with technology isn’t simple right now,” Ive stated. “Instead of viewing AI as an extension of those challenges, I perceive it quite differently.” He elaborated that one of the reasons he wanted to create an AI-driven device with OpenAI is to change how people interact with their everyday devices.

Though Ive recognized AI’s potential to enhance productivity, he doesn’t seem to prioritize efficiency with these devices. Instead, he envisions them contributing positively to society. The aim is for them to “make us happy, fulfilled, peaceful, less anxious, and more connected,” he expressed.

Earlier reports suggested that OpenAI is set to develop a new type of hardware that doesn’t resemble conventional phones or laptops. In a recent preview for OpenAI employees, Altman hinted that the product would be aware of a user’s environment and daily experiences, as per The Wall Street Journal. This device might be without a screen and could depend on inputs from cameras and microphones.

OpenAI has not disclosed a public launch date for the devices, but late 2026 may be the target, as indicated by the Financial Times. The publication has recently reported that technical challenges have hindered the device’s development.
