How Artificial Intelligence Assists Children in Choosing the Ideal College

After Julia Dixon completed her degree at the University of Michigan in 2014, her family and friends sought her guidance on the college application process. Eager to share her newfound knowledge about higher education, Dixon quickly discovered the overwhelming need for support within her community and how challenging it was for many families to obtain that assistance.

The American School Counselor Association reports that the ratio of college counselors to students in the US is one counselor for every 376 students. Many students lack adequate access to college counselors who can assist them with admissions or help them determine which schools and fields of study would be the best fit. While hiring a private college counselor is an option, it can be prohibitively expensive, costing thousands of dollars.

In 2023, Dixon established ESAI, an AI-driven platform aiming to support students through the college admissions process. She also shares college planning videos on TikTok, discussing how AI tools can assist those uncertain about their career paths. Access to the AI platform begins at approximately $21 per month, significantly more affordable than private counseling.

The Right Fit

According to Dixon, ESAI employs a matching algorithm to help students navigate the various factors involved in selecting a school.

Initially, ESAI connects students with a “major mentor” followed by the school matchmaker tool. These resources examine aspects such as the students’ aspirations, social preferences, optimal class sizes, and their desire to live close to campus. The results are tailored to each individual’s needs.

“Many students approach us when they are in the midst of applying,” Dixon notes. They may have a clear idea of where they want to apply but require assistance with their admissions essays or enhancing their applications. “Our college essay support and quantifying calculator enable students to articulate the impact of activities they have already engaged in,” she explains. For instance, if a student frequently cares for younger siblings, the software can help them frame that experience as a development of leadership skills, making it suitable for their application.

Spending Wisely

While selecting the right school and major is a priority for many families, financial considerations are also crucial. “The financial aspect is significant,” Dixon states. “How do we compare in-state versus out-of-state tuition? How can we find scholarships that might help?” ESAI’s scholarship feature aligns a student’s interests and demographics with their financial situation to identify optimal scholarship opportunities. For example, scholarships are available for first-generation American students or for females pursuing STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and math.

Jon Carson launched the College Guidance Network, an AI-based counseling platform, when his son was a sophomore in high school. At that time, Carson struggled to secure an appointment with the school counselor and found limited resources tailored for parents.

Discussions around college applications—deciding where to apply and assessing affordability—often take place outside of regular hours, Carson explains. “We’re having these conversations with our kids at night, on weekends, and during vacations, while during the day they’re in classes and we’re at work. Unfortunately, counselors aren’t available during the evenings or weekends,” he notes, highlighting a significant disparity.
