Do You Have an Android Phone? Google Believes You Might Be Interested in a Googlebook Laptop.

Google has established several standards, such as incorporating “premium materials” like aluminum, magnesium, or carbon fiber for lightweight designs. Devices must have a minimum of 16 GB of RAM, achieve over 45 tera operations per second (TOPS), feature a touchscreen (LCD or OLED), a backlit keyboard, a haptic trackpad, Dolby Atmos speakers, studio-quality microphones with noise cancellation, and offer at least 14 hours of battery life. Googlebooks will benefit from 10 years of software updates.

Additionally, they will include the Glowbar—a distinctive LED strip on the laptop’s exterior that signifies it as a Googlebook. This element is a nod to the glowbar from the original Chromebook Pixel. (As an aside, Google has not yet confirmed if a Googlebook will be developed under its Made by Google Pixel hardware division.) Developers can utilize the Glowbar to tailor the lighting to specific actions in their applications, and there is also an Easter egg app that allows consumers to personalize the light color and animation. Similar to the HiLight feature on the latest Pixel phones, the Glowbar will light up when you interact with Gemini.

“While the laptop excels in many areas, much of its design harks back decades, predating the advent of mobile devices,” remarked Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem, during the event. “Transforming laptops is a long-term project. Our initial focus is on building for the Android community, as there currently isn’t a laptop tailored to seamlessly integrate with your Android phone.”

The Googlebook combines Android’s mobile-centric operating system with ChromeOS, which powers Chromebooks. Google affirms that Chromebooks will remain available and serve schools while continuing to provide an affordable option for consumers. Though the interface of the Googlebook resembles an enlarged version of Android, it is not merely an Android-based desktop; instead, it is a distinct operating system optimized for both x86 and ARM chip architectures.

One particularly intriguing aspect is the operation of Android apps on the device, which are organized into three categories. When setting up your Googlebook with your Android phone, vital data transfers effortlessly to the laptop, encompassing Wi-Fi networks, passwords, settings, messages, contacts, and photos. However, not all mobile apps will automatically install, as Google designates some as “better on the web,” such as Facebook. (You can still choose to install the Facebook app for a mobile-like experience, if desired.)
