Meta Allows Everyone to Use Your Instagram Photos for AI Creations—If You Don’t Opt Out

On Tuesday, Meta unveiled its first AI image model from the Meta Superintelligence Labs, aiming to rival OpenAI’s GPT Images 2.0 and Google’s Nano Banana 2 in the AI image generation sector.

The model, named Muse Image, has been integrated deeply into the Instagram app. As part of this rollout, public Instagram profiles are now automatically included as potential sources for generative AI remixes. By simply tagging a public account in a prompt, users can leverage Meta AI to create an image using that account’s likeness.

Meta promotes this feature as an engaging way to customize image generations with real people’s photos. “Whether you want to craft a unique event invitation, brainstorm a collaborative creative idea, or produce a personalized graphic, tagging a username allows Meta AI to utilize public images to create a visual that’s ready for sharing,” states one of Meta’s announcement blogs regarding the new AI capability.

To prevent AI-generated images of your Instagram posts without turning your account private, you’ll need to modify settings within the app. Open Instagram, tap your profile, and then click the three lines in the top-right corner. Scroll down to the Sharing and reuse tab. You should find a section titled Allow people to use your content on Instagram and with AI features on Meta, which includes toggles for Posts and Reels.

When I checked my personal account on Tuesday afternoon, the settings hadn’t yet been updated to reflect this new option.

Instagram’s help center provides further details on how this feature affects users, noting that “individuals may be able to create content using your Instagram content with AI features at Meta” if your account remains public and set to the default options. (A previously archived version of this page from 2025 does not contain similar AI-related language.)

While changing your account to private or adjusting your settings can stop new images from being generated, existing AI images created with your content will not be removed.

It’s important to note that Instagram users may remix your images using AI without your awareness. “You will not be notified about content created using AI features at Meta,” states the company’s help page. Among the various concerns surrounding this change, the lack of notification for such actions raises the most significant alarm.

Though it’s concerning how frequently companies require users to opt out of AI training instead of opting in—similar to how Google Search now saves media uploads for AI training—the new toggle should be turned off immediately if you wish to avoid further generations based on your Instagram photos and videos.
