As I mentioned earlier, AI transcription and LLMs are broadly accessible technologies. It shouldn’t be surprising that numerous alternatives to Wispr Flow are currently available.

For Mac users, the entirely free and open source MacParakeet is an excellent choice. It’s open source and completely free to download and use without needing an account. Additionally, there’s no upselling within the application. Transcription is managed using local models like Parakeet or Whisper, and various LLMs—both local and online—are supported for formatting. This is the closest zero-cost app to Wispr Flow that I’ve found.

VoiceInk, another option for Mac users, is open source and free if you download the code from GitHub and compile it yourself. The app typically costs $25 as a one-time payment, granting access to all features without continuous costs. Keep in mind that the formatting step requires an API key from a service like Gemini, Anthropic, OpenAI, or Claude.

For Windows and Linux users, FOSS Voquill is a completely free, open source software option that works offline. While it lacks a formatting step, which is a drawback, I’m including it as the best free choice for Windows and Linux without frustrating upselling.

Windows users, along with Mac users who aren’t keen on the previous options, have one more alternative: OpenWhispr. This open source tool doesn’t require an account, though you’ll need to locate a small “Continue without an account” button. The application does offer a subscription, but you can choose to set up local models and external API keys to avoid any charges.

Do You Really Need to Dictate Your Thoughts?

Wispr Flow has some advantages, such as being easy to set up and offering a consistent user interface. I can see why someone might prefer to subscribe. However, if you’re on a budget, there are free alternatives available.

I enjoyed exploring this expanding realm, but I’m sticking with my keyboard. Wispr Flow and similar applications promise to enable writing at the speed of thought, but I type quicker than I can think. Philosophically speaking, writing is how I process my thoughts. Crafting a sentence, reflecting on it, and refining it isn’t an irritating part of writing—it is the writing process. Often, I don’t grasp my viewpoint on a subject until I take the time to refine my ideas. I can’t shake the feeling that much of that depth would be lost if I simply spoke to my computer instead of typing.

However, every mind functions differently, and these tools may be effective for you, which is why I’m pleased to see so many alternatives available.
