Gemini 3 Has Arrived, Promising to Enhance Search Intelligence, According to Google

Google has unveiled Gemini 3, its most advanced artificial intelligence model yet, boasting superior reasoning, multimedia capabilities, and coding expertise. As discussions about an AI bubble intensify, the company emphasizes that its latest offering transcends a mere clever model and chatbot—it aims to enhance Google’s current products, particularly its profitable search business, starting today.

“We are the backbone of Google, and we’re integrating AI throughout our services now,” Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, shared with WIRED in an interview prior to the announcement.

Hassabis acknowledges that the AI market seems inflated, with numerous unproven startups enjoying multibillion-dollar valuations. Google and other AI companies are also investing billions to develop new data centers for training and operating AI models, raising concerns about a potential market downturn.

However, even if the AI bubble were to burst, Hassabis believes Google is insulated. The company is already leveraging AI to enhance offerings such as Google Maps, Gmail, and Search. “In a negative scenario, we will rely more on that,” Hassabis states. “In a positive scenario, I think we possess the broadest portfolio and the most innovative research.”

Google is also employing AI to develop popular new tools like NotebookLM, which can automatically produce podcasts from written content, and AI Studio, which can create prototypes of applications using AI. It is even investigating the integration of this technology into fields like gaming and robotics, which Hassabis asserts could yield significant benefits in the coming years, irrespective of the overall market conditions.

Google is releasing Gemini 3 today via the Gemini app and in AI Overviews, a Google Search feature that compiles information alongside traditional search results. In demonstrations, the company illustrated that certain Google queries, such as requests for details about the three-body problem in physics, will trigger Gemini 3 to spontaneously create a custom interactive visualization.

Robby Stein, vice president of product for Google Search, mentioned at a briefing before the launch that the company has experienced “double-digit” growth in queries phrased in natural language, likely aimed at AI Overviews, compared to the previous year. The company has also observed a 70 percent increase in visual searches, which utilize Gemini’s ability to analyze images.

Despite its substantial investment in AI and significant advancements, including the development of the transformer model that powers most large language models, Google faced disruption from the rapid emergence of ChatGPT in 2022. This chatbot not only catapulted OpenAI into the spotlight of AI research but also posed a challenge to Google’s core business by providing a new and potentially simpler approach to web searching.
