Jordan vs. Algeria isn’t exactly a thrilling World Cup clash for the average soccer fan.

Ranked 63rd and 29th globally, according to FIFA, the match will take place at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium (formally known as Levi’s Stadium) in Santa Clara. However, the majority of fans from both countries are concentrated on the East Coast. Moreover, with outrageously high ticket prices and travel expenses, Algerians wishing to attend must also contend with $15,000 US visa bond payments.

Despite these challenges, FIFA is charging $450 for a subpar view near the corner flag. On the official resale marketplace, prices have plummeted. On May 17, it marked the first instance of a game selling for under $100—a milestone celebrated on the r/WorldCup2026Tickets subreddit.

What started as a simple fan community dedicated to securing tickets for the priciest World Cup ever has evolved into an organized, AI-driven grassroots effort with its own ticketing system, functioning almost in real time. Reddit users—r/WorldCup2026Tickets boasts over 140,000 members—alert one another about unexpected ticket releases from FIFA, sharing information on availability and fluctuating prices. They create DIY tools that reveal cheaper deals and trade tickets privately, undermining FIFA and scalpers.

Recently, as prices for major games fell below their face values, the subreddit buzzed with “do not buy” threads and “HOLD” memes, reminiscent of the 2021 GameStop events on r/WallStreetBets, as fans hope for further price drops. “The ‘HOLD’ culture has gained significant traction,” comments Luke, a member based in Chicago who requested anonymity. “It began with frustrations over prices but has transformed into a coordinated effort against both FIFA’s pricing model and scalper markups.”

Aside from complaints about exorbitant prices, FIFA faces accusations of manufacturing artificial scarcity, employing a convoluted ticketing process that gradually drips inventory and lacks a clear price comparison method. This is also the first World Cup to use dynamic pricing and unlimited resale listings—one ticket for the final on July 19 is listed at $11.5 million. As a nonprofit, FIFA collects a 30 percent commission on each resale, evenly distributed between buyer and seller. On May 27, the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey issued subpoenas to FIFA as part of an inquiry into its ticketing practices.

This structure has enabled numerous resellers to profit, leaving many fans to overpay. But as ticket prices surged into the thousands, Reddit users banded together, creating free ticket analysis tools and sharing them on r/WorldCup2026Tickets.

On April 18, Luke launched SeatSidekick. Developed in just five days using Claude Code, the site attracted 178,000 unique visitors and over one million pageviews within its first month. It scans FIFA’s ticketing backend to deliver near-real-time data on seat availability, organized by price, while offering a user-friendly interface. Trend data and alerts also assist seat seekers in finding potential deals.

And it’s proving effective. Luke highlights the France vs. Senegal match, a prominent game in New York featuring stars like Kylian MbappĂ© and Sadio ManĂ©. The entry price fell by 25 percent in two weeks during May, landing around $450—relatively affordable. “People are celebrating price drops like victories and encouraging each other to hold off,” he notes. “It has become a blend of community support and strategies to outsmart scalpers.”

Fans are also leveraging the platform to expose scammers. “When someone posts on Reddit claiming to sell two tickets for an outrageous price, the next comment often points out, ‘Yeah, but SeatSidekick is showing the same section for $500 less,’” Luke explains. “It’s helping to shield fans from scalpers’ tactics.”
