Google and OpenAI's Chatbots Can Transform Women's Photos to Show Them in Bikinis

Some individuals utilizing popular chatbots are creating bikini deepfakes by using images of fully dressed women as their source material. Many of these fabricated images seem to be generated without the consent of the women depicted. Additionally, some of these users are sharing tips on how to use generative AI tools to undress women in photos and make them look like they are in bikinis.

In a now-deleted Reddit post titled “gemini nsfw image generation is so easy,” users exchanged strategies for utilizing Gemini, Google’s generative AI model, to create images of women in scanty outfits. While many images in the thread were completely AI-generated, one particular request stood out.

A user shared a photo of a woman in an Indian sari, asking someone to “remove” her clothing and “put a bikini” on her instead. Another user responded with a deepfake image to fulfill the request. After WIRED alerted Reddit about these posts and sought comments from the company, Reddit’s safety team removed both the request and the AI deepfake.

“Reddit’s sitewide rules prohibit nonconsensual intimate media, including the behavior in question,” stated a spokesperson. The subreddit where this discussion took place, r/ChatGPTJailbreak, had amassed over 200,000 followers before Reddit banned it under the platform’s “don’t break the site” policy.

As generative AI tools that facilitate the creation of realistic yet false images continue to emerge, users of these tools are persisting in harassing women with nonconsensual deepfake visuals. Millions have visited harmful “nudify” websites that allow users to upload actual photos of individuals and request that they be undressed using generative AI.

Aside from xAI’s Grok, most mainstream chatbots typically do not permit the generation of NSFW images in their outputs. These bots, which include Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, are also equipped with safeguards designed to prevent harmful creations.

In November, Google introduced Nano Banana Pro, a new imaging model adept at modifying existing photos and crafting hyperrealistic images of people. OpenAI recently countered with its own updated imaging model, ChatGPT Images.

As these tools advance, likenesses may become increasingly realistic when users manage to bypass the safety features.

In a different Reddit thread focused on generating NSFW images, a user inquired about methods to evade guardrails while altering someone’s outfit to make the subject’s skirt appear tighter. In WIRED’s limited tests to verify that these techniques were effective on Gemini and ChatGPT, we successfully transformed images of fully clothed women into bikini deepfakes using straightforward prompts in plain English.
