Napster Returns with a Mission to Create Digital Replicas of Educators

Napster has returned. The brand that once instilled dread in music executives during the early internet boom may soon make its way into classrooms.

In Dubai, UAE, it has forged a strategic alliance with Gems Education to create AI agents and digital personas aimed at the education sector. With this move, the infamous music-sharing company is integrating its technology into educational settings, exploring how AI can enhance the roles of both teachers and students.

Today’s Napster is a far cry from its original form as a peer-to-peer music-sharing platform. Established in 1999 by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, the service transformed the music downloading landscape and compelled the entertainment industry to rethink content distribution, sales, and control.

Ultimately, Napster became embroiled in numerous legal disputes over copyright violation, leading to the shutdown of its original service in 2001 following a series of unfavorable court decisions.

After its closure, the company underwent various transformations, most recently as a music-streaming service, until being acquired by Florida-based tech firm Infinite Reality in 2025 for $207 million, transitioning to an AI-focused platform. Earlier this year, it unexpectedly terminated its music-streaming service.

The company is now setting up a regional hub in Dubai, with Samuel Huber, the former founder and CEO of UK-based tech firm Landvault—acquired by Infinite Reality in 2024—taking charge as Napster’s CEO for the Middle East and Africa.

“The brand has always aimed to empower users,” Huber mentions. “Twenty-five years ago, it revolved around music ownership for individuals rather than gatekeepers. Today, it’s the same principle but centered on data and intelligence.”

Huber emphasizes the need to challenge the dominance of major AI corporations. “The companies behind AI models hold significant power; they’re developing extraordinary algorithms, and we aspire for Napster to serve as an alternative.”

Napster’s initiatives for Gems will focus on developing proof-of-concept projects and demonstrations, including the digitalization of educators, gamified learning experiences, AI-assisted content creation, and classroom simulations.

The initial phase will be centered at the Gems School of Research and Innovation, where the Gems Global Education AI Hub and Gems Intelligence 360 platform will create a practical environment for educators, students, and partners to collaboratively design, test, and assess AI agents and digital personas.

Napster will offer dedicated resources for design, development, and product management leveraging Napster Learn, its AI-driven learning system. Digital replicas of teachers, for instance, will provide round-the-clock assistance.

These digital twins, trained with a teacher’s materials, courses, and assignments, will exist online, creating a “copy of yourself to extend your time.” Students will have the opportunity to interact with them outside of class, pose questions, clarify concepts, and learn at their own pace, while teachers will receive insights on student inquiries and areas where additional support might be needed.

“We’re enhancing the learning experience through voice and video, fostering a more natural interaction with AI so that it resembles collaboration with coworkers, rather than just a machine or tool invoked on command, and we’re applying this technology across various sectors.”

Huber asserts that AI agents and digital personas amplify what teachers can achieve without undermining the essential human connection in education. He also states that student data will remain within the country and can be hosted on a company’s own servers when necessary. Furthermore, Napster does not utilize user data to train its AI models.
