Greg Brockman Assumes Leadership of OpenAI’s Product Division in Recent Organizational Reshuffle

OpenAI informed employees on Friday about a reorganization aimed at streamlining its product offerings, as confirmed by WIRED. Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, will now oversee the company’s product strategy alongside his responsibilities in AI infrastructure. This change becomes official after he had been temporarily managing OpenAI products while Fidji Simo, CEO of AGI deployment, took medical leave.
“We’re consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise,” Brockman stated in a memo shared with WIRED. He emphasized that OpenAI’s products are naturally converging and confirmed the intention to integrate ChatGPT and Codex into a single cohesive experience.
OpenAI is integrating ChatGPT, its AI coding assistant Codex, and its developer API into a unified product team. The company highlighted that Codex is increasingly driving its consumer and enterprise solutions, which are enhancing their capability to autonomously carry out digital tasks for users.
Key changes also affect other leaders at OpenAI. Thibault Sottiaux, the head of Codex, has been appointed to lead the core product and platform teams. Sottiaux was instrumental in positioning Codex as one of the fastest-growing products in OpenAI’s history. He is also one of the main figures in developing OpenAI’s upcoming “super app,” which aims to combine Codex, ChatGPT, and the Atlas web browser into a single desktop experience.
Nick Turley, who has been overseeing ChatGPT, is transitioning to lead OpenAI’s enterprise product initiatives. Turley has guided ChatGPT since its inception, growing it to over 900 million weekly active users, but will step away from consumer product responsibilities. Meanwhile, Ashley Alexander, a former VP at Instagram who has been working on health-related products, will now manage the consumer product division.
These adjustments mark the latest shift at OpenAI as leadership aims to concentrate efforts on core product areas, including ChatGPT, Codex, and the anticipated “super app.” Recently, OpenAI announced several executive changes, including Simo’s medical leave to prioritize her health, with Brockman taking charge of product strategy during her absence. The company confirmed that Simo is still on medical leave and is expected to return, noting her collaboration with Brockman on these structural updates.
In the past year, OpenAI has encountered rising competition, particularly from Anthropic in coding and Google in consumer chatbot arenas. OpenAI executives are seeking to streamline product offerings in anticipation of an IPO filing planned for later this year.
Additionally, several OpenAI executives departed last month, including the head of AI workspace for scientists, Kevin Weil; head of Sora, Bill Peebles; and the chief technology officer for enterprise applications, Srinivas Narayanan.
